Is Psycho Killer a good game?

I like Psycho Killer, it’s fun in the sense that it’s very cliche and pokes fun at the “Psycho Killer” genre. The artwork with the different cards and box props just brings it all together. Even their marketing and design on their website adds to the whimsy.

Pros:

The ARTWORK style and theme of the game as a whole is something I think that they did very well. Growing up in the 90s having the old VHS tapes, and getting to see a nice little nod to that is nostalgic. You don’t get to do it very often but you kinda get to explore the box and see what little nuances they put into the box. I wish more board game makers would take this approach themselves, adding little “easter eggs” into their work for people to stumble onto and find.

The SIMPLICITY of the game is nice too, it takes a minute to get everything down. But once you do, it’s easy to pick back up and even teach to others. They incorporate the survival aspect of the game nicely. Making it an easy experience to try and survive but not too complicated and hard that it feels clunky.

Then there’s the FAMILIARITY of the game and how to play it. When I first tried this game I told my family that it felt like a horror version of “Old Maid.” The game essentially means that you avoid the “old maid” or in this case the “Psycho Killer” at all costs. There are quite a few differences but it feels familiar which is something that I kind of liked.

Something else that is nice about Psycho Killer is all the extra content from the EXPANSIONS. There are 3 different expansions for the game. One is a drinking game called “Bloody Mary.” The next is a zombie expansion that’s called “Psycho Killer: Z.” The last expansion is called “Psycho Killer: Gratuitous Violence,” which allows you to add a 7th player and also adds a whole new set of cards to survive with.

The last thing I want to mention is the LENGTH OF THE GAME is very reasonable. I have many games that take 30 minutes to sometimes even over an hour long. Sometimes you just wanna play a game that’s only going to be about 15 minutes total. Psycho Killer is one of those games that doesn’t take forever to finish, which is nice to have in your lineup of games.

Cons:

My brother got hooked on this game when I first got it. Every time I came over for about a month, he would insist we play a game or two. I got a little worn out from playing it. So my particular con of this game is that it gets old after a while. Now also keep in mind that I don’t own the expansions, so I might have enjoyed myself for longer if I had more content to play. For the base game though I would say that the REPLAYABILITY, isn’t something that held up for more than a dozen games.

According to the box, it says that you can learn the game in 3 minutes. This might be true but I did not find it to be true. I was LEARNING THE GAME, and trying to teach my family at the same time. It’s not the game and actions themselves that are hard to learn, it’s more of the fact that there are so many cards, and my family gets easily confused when first learning a new game. This is another not-very-big con, but I figured I would say something about it since it was something I noticed. It probably took about 10 minutes reading through the rules and then explaining them to my family, and about two full games worth before they got the hang of it.

Should My Kids Play Psycho Killer?

I think of two things when it comes to kids playing Psycho Killer. First, being that if your littles are at that age where playing a game with bloody weapons and scary murders is still scary then you might not want them to play. Then I think of just being able to play the game at all, with there being so many different mechanics as the “Left For Dead” and VHS symbols that it might be too much and confuse kids and maybe some teens.

How many cards are in the Psycho Killer card game?

My Wife’s 2 Cents

Hello everyone! My two cents on this game would be that I am not the biggest fan of this game. Like my husband previously stated his brother loved this game and we would play it quite a bit with him. So I got burnt out on the game pretty quickly. Not to mention it’s probably been months since we have played it and I don’t remember much about this game. This is surprising since I can remember pretty much all of the other games we have played. (mind you we have probably over 50 board games)
